Holiday entitlement and holiday pay in the UK

Statutory annual leave, how it works for part-time and irregular-hours staff, and what holiday pay must include.

This guide covers payroll in the UK. You are viewing Nobicel for Ghana — see the guides for Ghana.

The statutory minimum

Almost all workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. For someone working five days a week, that is 28 days. You can include bank holidays in this total, and you can offer more in the contract.

Part-time and irregular hours

Part-time staff get the same 5.6 weeks, pro rata to the days they work. For irregular-hours and part-year workers, holiday can be accrued at 12.07% of the hours worked in each pay period.

Holiday pay

Holiday pay should reflect what the worker normally earns. For at least the first four weeks, that includes regular overtime, commission and certain allowances, not just basic pay. For variable pay, a 52-week reference period is used.

Keeping track

Nobicel tracks requests, approvals and balances for every employee, and pays holiday through the same pay run as everything else.

This guide is general information for UK employers, not legal or tax advice. Rates and thresholds change each tax year, so check current guidance on GOV.UK before acting on it.
